Gisela Romero

Since I emigrated from Venezuela to the United States, I’ve spent a long time listening to Immigrants’ stories, to understand the emotions of so many people that have had to leave their country of origin to start a better life in another place. However, it wasn’t until I had my recent solo show “A Constant Goodbye – The Table Runner’s Stories of Gisela Romero” at The Art & History Museums of Maitland, FL, that I started to understand that those emotions are the same emotions that all people experience when going from one state of their lives to another. Any transition in life is difficult and it’s good to know that we are not alone.
Fueled by this understanding, I combine drawings with texts to enrich each composition, breaking the rules of traditional drawing and writing categorization. My work draws attention to the interconnectedness between images and words and invites viewers to see and read stories that belong to them or their families.
I intend to share feelings that accompany us in every act or decision of our path through life: Nostalgia, appreciation of beauty, amusement, anger, anxiety, awkwardness, calmness, confusion, solitude, empathic pain, excitement, fear, horror, joy, relief, there all emotions that we have all felt at some point in life.
I enjoy the challenge of taking a story and giving it new life in my art.
I often work with organic forms and incorporate elements of nature into my pieces because nature will always be our great teacher.
